Lee Harvey Oswald-Texas: 1962-1963

Wednesday, June 13, 1962: The Oswalds arrive in Hoboken, New Jersey and clear immigration (WR, p.713; CE 946, 18 H 167; CE 2655, 26 H 8-11). LHO is briefly questioned by INS inspector Frederick Wiedersheim about his time in the Soviet Union. LHO states that he worked as a mechanic, never renounced his American citizenship and never voted or held a position in government (CE 833, 17 H 791).

Also there to meet the Oswalds is Spas T. Raikin of the Travelers Aid Society. LHO tells Raikin that he has only 63 dollars, nowhere to spend the night and needs help getting to Texas (CE 2655, 26 H 5-10). Rankin directs him to the New York City Department of Welfare who puts the family up for the night at the Times Square Hotel (CE 2213, 25 H 107). After the Department of Welfare contacts Vada Oswald, Robert wires $200.00 for airfare to Texas for LHO and his family (Oswald with Land and Land, 114-115).

Thursday, June 14, 1962: LHO learns of the money Robert has sent and initially refuses to accept it claiming it is too great of a financial hardship for his brother to bear. He asks the Welfare Department to loan him the money instead and when they decline, he states that the family will go as far as his meager funds will take them and seek further help along the way. The Welfare Department finally convinces him to accept the money and a case worker makes arrangements to pick up the money and get their plane tickets (CE 2213, 25 H 106-109).

4:15 PM: The Oswalds board flight 821 at Idlewild Airport (now JFK) bound for Dallas (CE 2213, 25 H 109).

Thursday, June 14, 1962, 7:16 PM: LHO, Marina and June arrive at Love Field in Dallas and are greeted by Robert, Vada and their children. LHO and his family move in with Robert and Vada where they would have a room to themselves (time: CE 2658, 26 H 12; Oswald with Land and Land, 115-117). Even though he had asked Robert to keep their return quiet, LHO seemed disappointed that there were no reporters to greet him (Oswald with Land and Land, 116).

Friday, June 15, 1962: LHO returns to Robert what he has left of the $200 that he gave him for airfare (1 H 318, WCT Robert Edward Lee Oswald).

Monday, June 18, 1962, 11 AM (app.): LHO visits the office of stenographer Pauline Bates and asks her to type a manuscript he has been working on about the Soviet Union. The pair would work on the manuscript for the next three days (CD 87, 1073-1075). The manuscript, which LHO intended to be published as a book, is found in CE 92, 16 H 287-336.

LHO visits the Texas Employment Commission to begin his job search. While there he asks about Russian speaking individuals for Marina to meet and is given the names of Peter Gregory and Max Clark (Bugliosi, 641; McMillan, 180; CE 1892 23 H 695).

LHO fills out an “Application for Review of Discharge or Separation from the Armed Forces of the United States” as part of his continuing effort to reverse his undesirable discharge. He includes a “Brief in Support of Application” as well as a statement. The Navy received the application on the 20^th (Cadigan Exhibit No. 3, 19 H 267).

Tuesday, June 19, 1962, 9 AM (app. time): LHO returns to the office of Pauline bates to work on the typing of his manuscript. The pair work until about 11:15 AM (CD 87, 1075).

After phoning previously, LHO visits the office of Peter Gregory, a Serbian born consulting petroleum engineer who speaks fluent Russian. LHO asks Gregory for a letter certifying that he is capable of translating Russian to English. After testing him by having him read from a random Russian book, Gregory gives LHO the letter. Gregory later invites LHO to lunch and quizzes him about current conditions in the Soviet Union (2 H 338, WCT Peter Paul Gregory; CE 384, 16 H 976, Gregory, 83).

3:00 PM (app. time) LHO returns to Bates’ office and they again work for a short time (CD 87, 1075).

Wednesday, June 20, 1962, 10 AM (app. time): LHO and Bates work on his manuscript for a third and final day. When Bates finishes the 10 ^th page, LHO stops her and states he has run out of money. Although Bates offers to continue working and arrange payment later, LHO declines and pays her $10.00 (CD 87, 1075). Probably around this time, Virginia Valle at the Criner Career School in Fort Worth also typed parts of LHO’s manuscript. She stated the notes were difficult to read and that she only completed four or five pages (CD 735, 399).

Thursday, June 21, 1962 (app.): After getting time off from her job caring for an elderly woman in nearby Crowell, TX, Marguerite visits LHO and his family. She is impressed by Marina’s beauty and lavishes attention on June. She also states her intention to quit her job and move to Fort Worth and have LHO and family join her there. LHO is not impressed with this idea but Marguerite is insistent (Bugliosi, 640-641). McMillan places Marguerite’s visit on June 15, but this seems unlikely. In her WC testimony, Marguerite recalled that she could not get time off to meet LHO at the airport upon their arrival. She testified that, “about a week later-I could not stand it anymore-I… took 3 days off and went to Fort Worth to see Lee and Marina”.

Friday, June 22, 1962: Johnny Tackett of the Fort Worth Press writes to LHO requesting an interview. Tackett also tries to contact LHO through his brother Robert and Peter Gregory without success (CD 102, 81; CD 7, 167).

INS advises the FBI that the Oswalds are bound for 7313 Davenport St. in Fort Worth (CE 2718, 26 H 93).

Sunday, June 24, 1962: After previously being contacted by LHO who was interested in finding Russian speaking acquaintances for Marina, Gali Clark, the Russian born wife of attorney Max Clark, phones LHO and invites him and Marina to dinner. LHO declines the offer, apparently due to the fact that Gali Clark had initially put him off (McMillan, 182; 8 H 344, WCT Max E. Clark). After LHO tells Marina that he refused Clark’s offer, an argument ensues that culminates in LHO striking Marina and threatening to kill her if she tells Robert (McMillan, 182-183).

We only have Marina’s word regarding some of the beatings that she says she endured such as this first one. However, there is no question that she was physically abused. Those who saw the bruises included Marguerite Oswald (who told the Warren Commission she was aware of the abuse), George and Jeanne de Mohrenschildt, Declan and Katarina Ford, George Bouhe and Elena Hall. Additionally, one member of the community, Alexander Kleinlerer, witnessed the abuse first hand. Kleinlerer told the Warren Commission that he saw LHO strike Marina across the face after noticing that a zipper on her dress was partly undone. Kleinlerer, who admitted he was afraid of LHO, said and did nothing (11 H 120, WC affidavit of Alexander Kleinlerer; CD 87, 1083; see November 3, 1962 entry). There is also a Secret Service report regarding Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon Tobias who managed the Elsbeth St. apartments in Dallas where the Oswalds lived. Mr. and Mrs. Tobias stated that neighbors complained the couple was very noisy and that LHO was beating his wife (CE 2189, 24 H 869).

Monday, June 25, 1962 (app.): Peter Gregory and his son Paul, a college student, visit the Oswalds at Robert's house. Arrangements are made for Marina to tutor Paul in the Russian language later that summer for which Gregory would pay her $35 to $40 (2 H 338, WCT Peter Paul Gregory; 9 H 142-144, WCT Paul Roderick Gregory; McMillan, 183). Paul Gregory told the Warren Commission that this meeting with LHO was “around the 25th, toward the end of June, 1962”. Earlier in the same testimony he characterized the meeting as being “within 10 days… after his initial contact with me at the office”. So, it is likely that this visit took place between the 25th and the 29th of June (2 H 340, WCT Peter Paul Gregory). Peter Gregory thought the decision for him to take lessons from Marina occurred not in June, but at a brief meeting with the Oswalds at their home on or about August 10th. The lessons started around the middle of August and continued until Gregory left for college in the middle of September (WCT Paul Roderick Gregory, 9 H 143).

The San Antonio office of the Immigration and Naturalization Service receives a letter from LHO (using the Davenport St. address) asking that they return June's birth certificate which he says was taken by customs in New York (CE 782-A, 17 H 668).

Tuesday, June 26, 1962: FBI agent John Fain phones Robert's house and speaks to Vada. After reminding Vada of her failed promise to notify the FBI upon LHO’s arrival, he speaks to LHO and requests that he come to the FBI office for an interview that day. During the interview, LHO tells Fain that he did not try and renounce his US citizenship while in the Soviet Union, and that the Soviets had not asked, nor had he offered, information regarding his Marine Corp service. LHO promises to notify the FBI of any contact by Soviet agents while reminding Fain that Marina is required by Soviet law to contact the embassy in Washington. Fain asks LHO if he would be willing to take a polygraph regarding the possibility that he has furnished information to the Soviets and he declines. Fain is not entirely satisfied with LHO’s responses and decides that he needs to be interviewed by the bureau again (Bugliosi, 642-643).

LHO files a job application with the Commercial Employment Service (CD 571, 1-3; CD 385, 225).

1501 West Seventh Street, Apt. 110, Fort Worth

July, 1962: Marguerite moves from Crowell, TX to 1501 West Seventh Street in Fort Worth (WCR, 715; CD 6, 47) where LHO and family would join her. Although Marguerite helped the young couple with the housework and cooking and later referred to this period as a “very happy month” (1 H 133, WCT Marguerite Oswald), the living arrangement was apparently fraught with difficulties from the beginning. In spite of the language barrier, Marina picked up on Marguerite’s resentment of her while LHO and his mother barely spoke to one another (McMillan, 185-187; 1 H 5, WCT Marina N. Oswald). LHO never filed a change of address with the Post Office, indicating that he probably didn’t intend for the arrangement to last long (WCR, 715).

The date that LHO and Marina moved in with Marguerite is unknown but it had to be after June 26 when Fain spoke to LHO at Robert’s place and when LHO also filled out a job application listing Robert’s address. It also had to be on or before July 13th when LHO applied for work at Louv-R-Pak and listed Marguerite’s address on his application. Marguerite thought the move was in early July since she remembered that LHO was living with her on her birthday which was the 19th (CE 2189, 24 H 866) and that assertion seems correct based on the available evidence.

Thursday, July 5, 1962: Pavel Golovachev, LHO’s old friend from Minsk, mails a letter to him at the Davenport St. address (CE 87, 16 H 269).

Friday, July 13, 1962: LHO applies for work at the Louv-R-Pak Division of the Leslie Welding Company (hereafter referred to as Leslie Welding) after a referral from the Texas Employment Commission. He lists his address as 1501 7 ^th Street (CE 2189 24 H 885).

Monday, July 16, 1962: LHO begins work at Leslie Welding working 9 hours (CE 2189, 24 H 883; Graves, Gene Exhibit No. 1, 20 H 19). Even though CE 2189, p. 884 shows the date he was hired as the 17th, there seems to be little doubt that LHO started work on the 16th. Graves, Gene Exhibit No. 1 (20 H 19) shows that he worked 9 hours on Monday the week of the July 21st and it would make sense to start employment on the beginning of the week.

2703 Mercedes Street, Fort Worth

Saturday, July 28, 1962 (app.): The Oswalds move to a new apartment on Mercedes St. in Fort Worth. The exact date of the move is unknown but a chronological review of the available evidence provides a few clues.

The earliest evidence of the Mercedes address is the return address on the letter LHO wrote to the Navy Discharge Review Board which is postmarked August 1st (CE 780, 17 H 660). LHO’s subscription to The Worker using the Mercedes address was received on August 6th and was probably mailed a few days before (CE 1172, 22 H 271). FBI agent John Fain contacted Robert Oswald on the 14th of August and was told that the Oswalds had moved. Although Robert couldn’t provide the street address, he gave Fain specific directions to the location. On the 15th, a neighbor told Fain that LHO had moved in “a few days ago” (4 H 419-420 WCT John W. Fain; CD 10, 3). Fain interviewed LHO on the 16th and he told the FBI agent that he had lived at the Mercedes address “since about the middle of July” (CE 2758, 26 H 143) but there is no evidence to support this claim and it is well known that LHO lied about most anything (even when it made no sense to do so) and had no great love for the FBI. Robert said that he helped LHO move on a Saturday morning which makes sense because both men were working (Oswald with Land and land, 122). If Robert is correct, and considering the information developed by Fain, the move was probably on Saturday, July 28th although it could also have been August 4th or 11th. LHO filed a change of address on August 17th (CE 2189, 24 H 866) which seems like a long time to wait, but he may have simply forgotten.

Shortly after the move while LHO is at work, Marguerite pays a visit bearing gifts for the family. When LHO finds out, he is furious and tells Marina not to let Marguerite in the house again. The next day Marguerite visits again and LHO finds her there on his return from work. He orders her to leave but she refuses citing her right to see the baby. LHO tells her not to buy any more gifts for them and after Marguerite eventually leaves, LHO and Marina quarrel and he strikes her several times across the face. After this incident, LHO’s beatings of Marina become routine, occurring once or twice a week (McMillan, 190-191).

Sunday, August 12, 1962: LHO, using the Mercedes address, writes to the Socialist Workers Party in New York asking for information about the organization (Dobbs Exhibit No. 9, 19 H 575-576).

Monday, August 13, 1962: The State Department receives $10.00 in cash from LHO, the first payment toward his transportation loan (CE 1120, 22 H 86).

4:45 PM (app. time): FBI agent Fain again interviews LHO, this time in the agent’s car. Although Fain finds LHO more relaxed than the previous interview and he answers most of the questions put to him, he still refuses to tell the agent his reasons for defecting to the Soviet Union. LHO admits to being interviewed by the Soviet MVD but denies making any deals. After LHO assures Fain that he will contact him if he is approached by Soviet agents, Fain decides that LHO poses no serious security risk and closes his file (time: CE 2718, 26 H 93; 4 H 422–425, WCT John W. Fain; CE 824, 17 H 733). LHO tells Marina that he is afraid the two interviews by the FBI in a relatively short time are just the beginning of closer scrutiny of him by the bureau (McMillan, 189).

Saturday, August 25, 1962: LHO cashes his paycheck at Montgomery Ward. The amount is $47.15 (CE 1165 22 H 222).

LHO, Marina and baby June attend a dinner party at the home of Peter Gregory and his wife. Also present were Paul Gregory, George Bouhe, a semi-retired accountant who is considered the patriarch of the Dallas-Fort Worth Russian community, and Anna Meller (8 H 358, WCT George A. Bouhe; CD 87, 1086). The party is a way for the Gregorys to introduce the Oswalds to the community, a close-knit group of immigrants from eastern Europe who were largely anti-communist and interested in assimilating into US society. The party guests are impressed by the well-dressed young couple, although they like Marina more than LHO. The community would play an important role in the life of the Oswalds and provide moral and financial support (McMillan, 195-198). For more detail on the Russian community see McMillan, 193-199 and Bugliosi, 646-649.

The Oswalds are introduced to several more members of the Russian community over the next few weeks. Perhaps the most significant member of the community that the Oswalds meet during this period is George de Mohrenschildt, an eccentric petroleum engineer born in Czarist Russia, who becomes a friend and mentor to LHO. They would also meet de Mohrenschildt’s wife Jeanne, who would be especially helpful to Marina (Bugliosi, 647-648; McMillan, 214-215). The de Mohrenschildts probably met the Oswalds in September, 1962 (McMillan, 214).

Anna Meller: The first impression of Lee Harvey is a man absolutely sick. I mean mentally sick ... He’s against Soviet Union. He’s against United States.

Alexander Kleinlerer: [Most members of the Russian community disliked LHO due to] his political philosophy, his criticism of the United States, his apparent lack of interest in anyone but himself and because of his treatment of Marina.

George de Mohrenschildt: Sometimes he was obnoxious. I don’t know… I always had a liking for him. There was something charming about him… I just liked the guy-that is all.

Tuesday, August 28, 1962: LHO orders a copy of The Teachings of Leon Trotsky from Pioneer Publishers in New York, a subsidiary of the Socialist Workers Party (Dobbs Exhibit No. 9, 19 H 571; subsidiary: Bugliosi, 645).

LHO works 8 hours at Leslie Welding (Graves, Gene Exhibit No. 1, 20 H 20).

Wednesday, August 29, 1962: The National Banker's Life Insurance Company of Texas lists Marguerite's address as 808 Summit, Apt. 301, Fort Worth (CD 205, p. 572). This address is around the corner from the apartment she shared with LHO on W. Seventh Street and part of the same complex (CE 2189, 24 H 866). James Young, who worked for the rental division of the Fort Worth National Bank that managed the Rotary Apartments in question, stated that Marguerite first moved there on August 8, 1962 (CE 2189, 24 H 866). But the available evidence shows this had to be an error. It is possible that August 8th is the day Marguerite changed apartments within the same complex.

September, 1962:LHO subscribes to the Soviet humor magazine “Krokodil” (CD 201, 2).

In September and October, George Bouhe corresponds with Marina, giving her English writing exercises to perform (8 H 375, WCT George A. Bouhe).

Saturday, September 1, 1962: LHO cashes his paycheck at Montgomery Ward. The amount is $47.96 (CE 1165 22 H 222).

Using the Mercedes address, LHO purchases a money order in the amount of $9.71 to use as payment on his State department loan (CD 44, 2).

Sunday, September 2, 1962 (app.): George Bouhe drives the Oswalds to the home of Elena Hall, an Iranian-born dental technician of Russian descent, to inquire about dental work for Marina. There, they also meet Alexander Kleinlerer, a plastics company employee who was courting Hall at the time (8 H 393, WCT Elena A. Hall; 11 H 119, WC affidavit of Alexander Kleinlerer). Kleinlerer remembered meeting the Oswalds on a “Sunday morning in the fore part of September”, which would make it the 2nd or 9th. It was probably the 2nd, since on the 9th the Oswalds likely visited the home of Anna Meller (McMillan, 200). Hall thought she met the Oswalds in July, but that can’t be right since she was introduced to them by George Bouhe who didn’t meet the couple until August 25th.

Monday, September 3, 1962: LHO receives a paid holiday for Labor Day (Graves, Gene Exhibit No. 1, 20 H 20).

Tuesday, September 4, 1962: LHO works 8 hours at Leslie Welding (Graves, Gene Exhibit No. 1, 20 H 20).

Wednesday, September 5, 1962: The State Department receives the money order from LHO that he purchased on the 1 ^st (CE 1120, 22 H 86).

Sunday, September 9, 1962 (app.): The Oswalds take a bus to Dallas using $5.00 given to them by George Bouhe. He drives them to the home of Anna Meller and her husband for a luncheon where they later meet Delclan Ford, an American geologist, and his Russian-born wife Katherine, whose nickname is Katya (McMillan, 200).

There is conflicting information about the date of this luncheon. The Fords thought the luncheon happened in late August. Both Bouhe and Mrs. Meller didn’t meet the Oswalds until August 25th at the Gregorys. Most of the Russian community gatherings occurred on weekends so if the Fords are correct, it would have to have been on August 26, the day after Bouhe and Meller met the Oswalds. However, Declan Ford thought that he learned about the Oswalds from Bouhe. It seems unlikely both that he could have learned of the Oswalds and Mrs. Meller could have arranged a party so quickly. Additionally, Mrs. Ford testified that she learned about the Oswalds from Bouhe “a couple of weeks before” the luncheon and that would fit nicely with Bouhe contacting the Fords after meeting the Oswalds on August 25th, and with the luncheon date being September 9th. Also, Bouhe testified that he gave the Oswalds bus money on September 9th and then presumably drove them to the luncheon although he doesn’t specifically say so. Delcan Ford said they were invited for cocktails and met the Oswalds later that afternoon rather than earlier at the luncheon, so the Oswalds had to have traveled to the luncheon with Bouhe through the process of elimination as the Mellers had no car. Curiously, Anna Meller never mentioned the luncheon in her Warren Commission testimony or in a statement she gave to the Secret Service (2 H 297, WCT Katherine N. Ford; 2 H 323, WCT Declan P. Ford; 8 H 376, WCT George A. Bouhe).

Sunday, October 7, 1962: The Oswalds host several guests including Marguerite (who would not see LHO again for over a year), George Bouhe, Anna Meller, Elena Hall and John Hall, her estranged husband. Also present is Alexandra Taylor, the daughter of George de Mohrenschildt, and her husband Gary who is meeting the Oswalds for the first time. Sometime during the gathering, LHO announces to the group that he has “lost” his “seasonal” job at Leslie Welding. After a discussion, a plan of action is formulated and it is decided that LHO will have better job prospects in Dallas, which is larger than Fort Worth. Marina, who has a dental appointment in Dallas the next day, will stay there with the Taylors for a few days and then return to Fort Worth and stay with Elena Hall until LHO has secured work (McMillan, 203-204). LHO and Marina agree to the plan and she leaves with the Taylors that night (9 H 83, WCT Gary E. Taylor). In reality, LHO had decided to quit his job, which he disliked, and take advantage of the Russian community’s generosity (McMillan, 204).

Monday, October 8, 1962: After working a full day at Leslie Welding, LHO walks off the job without giving notice. That night, Robert and the Halls help LHO load his belongings into a pickup truck for storage in the Halls garage. LHO later takes a bus to Dallas (McMillan, 204; Robert helped move: 1 H 138, WCT Marguerite Oswald; Oswald with Land and Land, 126). LHO later wrote to Leslie Welding to tell them he had resigned and to ask them to forward his paycheck (CE 820-A, 17 H 699). Where LHO stayed on the nights of October 8th through the 14th is unknown.

Using the Mercedes address, LHO sends the State Department a $10.00 money order toward payment of his transportation loan (CE 2779, 26 H 164).

Jeanne de Mohrenschildt drives Marina to her dental appointment at Baylor University where she has her teeth cleaned and x-rayed (McMillan, 204; CE 1403, 22 H 771).

Tuesday, October 9, 1962: LHO visits the Dallas office of the Texas Employment Commission (hereafter TEC) and is interviewed by Don Brooks of the industrial division (Cunningham Exhibit No. 4, 19 H 405). Helen Cunningham testified (10 H 120) that she could have also seen LHO on the 9th as well as the 10th, but LHO was referred to her by Don Brooks so it is likely that Brooks saw him on the 9th and she saw him on the 10th.

In Dallas, LHO rents Post Office Box number 2915 using the Taylor’s address of 3519 Fairmount (Cadigan Exhibit No. 13, 19 H 286). LHO misspelled the address as “Fairmore”, but according to the Taylors it was actually “Fairmount” (11 H 124, WCT Mrs. Donald Gibson; 9 H 83, WCT Gary E. Taylor).

Wednesday, October 10, 1962: LHO again visits the Dallas offices of the TEC (CD 580, 6). He is interviewed by Helen Cunningham, a counselor in the clerical division. Cunningham had been advised that LHO would be coming by Anna Meller’s husband Teofil, who also told her about his current need of work. LHO scores well on several tests and presents a good appearance and ability to communicate (Bugliosi, 651). On the same day, LHO is referred by the TEC to Harrell & Hamilton, an architectural firm (Cunningham Exhibit No. 1-A, 19 H 400).

LHO returns the TV set he purchased from Montgomery Ward (CE 1167, 22 H 252). According to McMillan, LHO was afraid the Russian community would withdraw their financial help if they realized he had enough money to buy a TV set (McMillan, 203). Another explanation is since he and Marina would be living apart for an indeterminate period, the TV became an unneeded expense.

LHO files a change of address with the Post Office to forward his mail from Mercedes St. to his new Post Office Box 2915 (CE 1390, 22 H 717).

LHO mails a postcard to Robert informing him of his new address and asking that he pick up any mail there may be at Mercedes St. (CE 319, 16 H 883).

The State Department receives a $10.00 money order from LHO as a payment on his transportation loan (CE 1120, 22 H 86).

Jeanne de Mohrenschildt drives Marina to her second dental appointment where she has three extractions (McMillan, 204; CE 1403, 22 H 771).

Sometime between the 10 ^th and the 15^th, Marina moves to Elena Hall’s home in Fort Worth (McMillan, 204; CE 1144, 22 H 158). The exact date is unknown, but all sources agree that Marina stayed with the Taylors during the time that she had at least her first two dental appointments. Both Elena Hall and Alexander Kleinlerer said that Marina was already at Hall’s home when she had her car accident on October 18th, and this narrows the window of time for the move (Affidavit of Alexander Kleinlerer, 11 H 120; CE 1144, 22 H 158). Also, Hall accompanied Marina to June’s baptism on the 16th and this is further evidence that she was staying with her by that time (CE 1957-A, 23 H 778).

Probably between October 9th and 11th, LHO was interviewed for a job by Samuel Ballen, a Dallas businessman and friend of George de Mohrenschildt. Ballen felt LHO “probably wouldn’t fit in” and chose not to hire him at his firm, Electrical Log Services. Although Ballen could not date the meeting other than to say it was in “the latter part of 1962 or the early part of 1963”, he did remember that LHO told him he was staying at the YMCA and Marina was staying with friends. This information helps to date the meeting to the period in early October when LHO was known to be at the YMCA (9 H 46-47, WCT Samuel B. Ballen; Bugliosi, 651).

Thursday, October 11, 1962: LHO is referred to Jaggers-Chiles-Stovall (hereafter JCS), a graphics art firm, by Louise Latham of the Texas Employment Commission. After an interview, the supervisor John Graef tells him to call back for a decision (10 H 175-180, WCT John G. Graef).

Friday, October 12, 1962: After calling Graef, LHO starts work at Jaggers-Chiles-Stovall as a photo print trainee (CE 427, 17 H 156; 10 H 176, WCT John G. Graef). He works from 8:30 am until 5:30 pm with an hour for lunch (CE 1850, 23 H 529).

Alex Kleinlerer arrives at the Hall home to discuss the Oswalds move. There, he witnesses LHO’s physical abuse of Marina (11 H 121, Affidavit of Alex Kleinlerer).

Alex Kleinlerer: We had just begun to discuss the matter of moving the next day when Oswald observed that the zipper on Marina's skirt was not completely closed. He called to her in a very angry and commanding tone of voice just like an officer commanding a soldier. His exact words were, "Come Here!", in the Russian Language, and he uttered them the way you would call a dog with which you were displeased in order to inflict punishment on him. He was standing in the doorway leading from the living room into another room of the house. When she reached the doorway he rudely reprimanded her in a flat imperious voice about being careless in her dress and slapped her hard in the face twice. Marina still had the baby in her arms. Her face was red and tears came to her eyes. All this took place in my presence. I was very much embarrassed and also angry but I had long been afraid of Oswald and I did not say anything.

Sunday, November 4, 1962: Alexander Kleinlerer and the Taylors help the Oswalds load their belongings into a U-Haul trailer that LHO and Gary Taylor rented in Fort Worth. Kleinlerer stops LHO from “accidently” loading Mrs. Halls things into the trailer several times (11 H 121, Affidavit of Alex Kleinlerer).

The Taylors drive the Oswalds and their things to the Elsbeth St. apartment (11 H 140, WCT Mrs. Donald Gibson).

Alexandra Taylor (who was Mrs. Donald Gibson at the time of her WC Testimony): Marina was not happy with the apartment at all. She said it was filthy dirty, it was a pigsty and she didn't want to stay there. Lee said it could be fixed up… It was a hole. It was terrible, very dirty, very badly kept, really quite a slum… they were arguing very much when we left.

Monday, November 5, 1962: LHO works from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm at JCS (CE 1851, 23 H 537).

The Socialist Workers Party answers LHO’s request for membership advising him that since there is no Dallas branch he cannot join (Dobbs Exhibit 11, 19 H 578).

(app.) Possibly on this Monday night, LHO and Marina have a fight and she leaves the home without June and calls Anna Meller with the help of a garage attendant. Meller tells her to take a cab to their home and she and her husband will pay the fare. After going back to the Elsbeth apartment to get the baby, Marina goes to a doughnut shop and manages to explain that she needs a cab. By about 11:00 she is at the Meller’s (McMillan, 212; 8 H 386, WCT Anna N. Meller). The night of the argument is uncertain, but Anna Meller thought it was a Monday and that Marina stayed for about a week (8 H 386-387). Most sources place the day Marina left the Mellers as the 11th, which would indeed be about a week.

Shortly after the fight between LHO and Marina, George Bouhe oversees a meeting between Marina and members of the Russian community. Bouhe advises Marina to leave LHO and offers the help of the Russian community if she does (McMillan, 213).

However, he soon relents and helps with the loading of the car. The de Mohrenschildts take Marina to the Mellers. Later that day, George Bouhe drives Marina to the Fords where she would now stay since the Fords had a larger house than the Mellers (McMillan, 227-228).

While waiting, they have their picture taken at a photo booth. They are met by Robert and John Pic and it is the first time the three brothers have been together in about 10 years. After dinner, Paul Gregory picks up the Oswalds and takes them to his home for more socializing. The Oswalds take a late bus to Elsbeth Street (McMillan, 233-234; Oswald With Land and Land, 130-131).

John Pic: We did all the friendly sayings … I still was wondering if he was going to have this feeling of hostility toward me that he had shown the last time he had seen me [in 1952 at the time of the knife incident], but it didn't manifest itself whatsoever … [after dinner] my brother Robert offered to drive him back to the bus station … Lee said that they would be picked up by their friends, and I think sometime between 6 and 7 that night he [Gregory] came by. Now, my brother Robert, whenever he introduces me to anyone always refers to me as his brother [but] Lee referred to me as his half brother when he introduced me … right then and there I had the feeling that the hostile feeling was still there. Up until this time it didn't show itself, but I felt then, well, he still felt the same way … the Lee Harvey Oswald I met in November of 1962 was not the Lee Harvey Oswald I had known 10 years previous. This person struck me as someone with a chip on his shoulder.

(app.) The Oswalds attend a dinner party given by the de Mohrenschildts where the latter show films of a trip to Mexico and Central America. Other guests include Everett Glover, a chemist from Dallas, and his roommate Volkmar Schmidt, a German geologist (Bugliosi, 676). LHO and Schmidt have a discussion about politics that lasts “several hours.” LHO tells Schmidt that he had become interested in communism and the Soviet system because of his own experience living in an impoverished family. Schmidt says that LHO became disillusioned with the Soviet way of life, prompting his return to the US. Schmidt finds LHO to be “articulate” and “objective” and remembers that he did not discuss JFK or his policies. At one point in the conversation, Schmidt praises JFK and LHO “made no objection” to this statement. Schmidt believes LHO has “a burning dedication to political truth” and has “great ambitions.” Although Schmidt believes LHO to be a “violent person”, his views do not indicate “future violent action” against anyone (CD 5, 195).

McMillan places this party on February 13 (McMillan, 260). In an interview with PBS Frontline in 1993, Schmidt said that LHO was “obsessed with his anger [regarding the Bay of Pigs invasion] towards Kennedy”, which doesn’t jibe with his original FBI statement (Transcript of “Who Was Lee Harvey Oswald?” Frontline, PBS, November 16, 1993, p.15).

After the party, George de Mohrenschildt drives the Oswalds home and calls Schmidt a “fascist” and discusses the John Birch Society (McMillan, 259).

10:30 am: LHO mails an order to Klein’s Sporting Goods in Chicago for a 36 inch “Italian Carbine” rifle using the alias “A. Hidell” (CE 773, 17 H 635). Klein’s would substitute a 40-inch Mannlicher-Carcano for the one LHO had ordered, probably because they had run out of the 36-inch model (email from Gary Mack to David Von Pein, August 18, 2010). Likely the same day, LHO orders a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver from Seaport Traders in Los Angeles. He encloses $10.00 cash toward the $29.95 total with the balance due COD. He signs the order form with the pseudonym “A.J. Hidell” and lists his age as 28 although his actual age is 23. “Hidell’s” witness is listed as “D.F. Drittal”, another fictitious name according to Warren Commission experts who later testified that LHO was the author of all handwriting on the order form (7 H 376, WCT Heinz W. Michaelis; CE 790, 17 H 678; 4 H 361, 375, WCT Alwyn Cole; 7 H 424, WCT James C. Cadigan; WCR, 174).

Although the handgun order form was dated January 27, that could not have been the day the gun was ordered. Researchers Steve Roe, Sean DeGrilla and Chris Simondet found the magazine that the order form came from. It was the April 1963 issue of True Adventures. Researcher and author Dale Myers has suggested that LHO may have hoped to rush the order by back dating the coupon. Sunday, March 31, 1963: Marina takes at least 3 photographs (the so-called “Backyard Photos”) of LHO dressed all in black and holding the Mannlicher-Carcano rifle later used to kill JFK. He also has a pistol tucked into his waistband and is holding issues of The Militant and The Worker (Bugliosi, 685-86). Theorists have had a field day with the photos for years even though they were authenticated by the HSCA in the late seventies. LHO cashes his income tax return check of $57.40 (CE 1185, 22 H 224).

7:00 pm (app.) Michael Paine arrives at Neely Street to take the Oswalds to the Paine home for dinner. While waiting for Marina to get ready, he notices that LHO is rude to her and barks out orders. Paine and LHO have a good discussion about LHO’s defection to the Soviet Union and the capitalist and communist systems. At the Paine home, LHO is again rude to Marina and Paine is “shocked” and "offended" by his behavior. Paine realizes that Marina is dependent on LHO due to her inability to speak English. (McMillan, 277-78).

LHO’s termination from JCS becomes effective. He had been given notice 7 to 10 days previous due to substandard work (10 H 171, WCT Robert L. Stovall; 10 H 189-91, WCT John G. Graef; CE 427, 17 H 156).

Sunday, April 7, 1963: LHO probably travels by bus to a spot about half a mile from General Walker’s house. There he buries his rifle and spends time scouting the area for escape routes (Bugliosi, 689).

Monday, April 8, 1963: LHO, who is now out of work, leaves the apartment at his usual time. Unbeknownst to Marina, he travels to the Texas Employment Commission to look for work without success. That evening, he probably returns to the area near Walker’s home (Bugliosi, 689).

Tuesday, April 9, 1963: LHO leaves the apartment telling Marina he is going to pick up his paycheck (Bugliosi, 690).

Wednesday, April 10, 1963: LHO leaves the apartment in the morning at the usual time (WCT Marina Oswald; CE 1, 1 H 36). He would return for dinner and leave again at about 7:00 or 7:30 pm (WCT Marina Oswald; CE 1, 1 H 37).

9:00 pm (app.) LHO attempts to kill General Walker at his home in Dallas (WCR, 183). Marina learns of the assassination attempt after she confronts LHO (who had returned about 11:30 that evening) with a note (below) he had left providing instructions in the event he did not return, and he subsequently confessed the crime to her (WCR, 13-14; 1 H 16-17, WCT Marina Oswald; CE 1, 1 H 16; HSCA Final Report, Section 1.C, p. 60). Walker was saved when the bullet was deflected by the window frame through which the bullet had been fired. The window frame was probably not visible to LHO since his rifle scope would have focused beyond it and at the target (Bugliosi, 691-92). [LHO Note to Marina] 1. Here is the key to the post office box which is located in the main post office downtown on Ervay Street, the street where there is a drugstore where you always used to stand. The post office is four blocks from the drugstore on the same street. There you will find our mailbox.

2. I paid for the mailbox last month so you needn’t worry about it.

3. Send information about what has happened to me to the Embassy [the Soviet Embassy in Washington] and also send newspaper clippings (if there’s anything about me in the papers). I think the Embassy will come quickly to your aid once they know everything. I paid our rent on the second so don’t worry about it.

4. I have also paid for the water and gas.

5. There may be some money from work. They will send it to our post office box. Go to the bank and they will cash it.

6. You can either throw out my clothing or give it away. Do not keep it. As for my personal papers (both military papers and papers from the factory), I prefer that you keep them.

7. Certain of my papers are in the small blue suitcase.

8. My address book is on the table in my study if you need it.

9. We have friends here and the Red Cross will also help you.

10. I left you as much money as I could, $60 on the second of the month, and you and Junie can live on $10 a week.

11. If I am alive and taken prisoner, the city jail is at the end of the bridge we always used to cross when we went to town. (the very beginning of town, after the bridge.)

Thursday, April 11, 1963: LHO listens to the radio and learns that his shot missed Walker to the relief of Marina. After reading a newspaper, LHO is amused by details that the police got wrong. (Bugliosi, 673)

Friday, April 12, 1963: After checking the newspaper for news about Walker, LHO applies in person at the Texas Employment Commission for unemployment compensation benefits following his termination from Jaggars-Chiles-Stovall (WR 728; Bugliosi, 673).

Saturday, April 13, 1963: (presumed) LHO retrieves the Mannlicher-Carcano rifle from where he had hidden it near the railroad tracks following the Walker shooting and returns it to the Neely Street apartment (Bugliosi, Reclaiming History, WCT Jeanne De Mohrenschildt 9 H 315). Later around 10 pm, the De Mohrenschildts visit the Oswalds and George makes a joke about LHO missing Walker. It was at this time that Jeanne sees the rifle.(WCT Jeanne De Mohrenschildt 9 H 315-17.

Also on this day, LHO destroys most of the "notebook" and related Walker evidence that consisted of maps, photographs, notes and so forth (WCT Marina Oswald 11 H 292). Marina told McMillan (p. 288) that LHO destroyed the notebook evidence on the day after the shooting but her testimony under oath and closer to the event should be given more weight.
